Kalpa in a Day: What We Actually Did, What It Cost, and What We'd Change

A real one-day Kalpa sightseeing itinerary — part of our Kinnaur–Spiti trip series

Companion to our Kalpa Travel Guide

Kalpa wasn't supposed to be a major stop for us. It was basically a place to sleep before continuing toward Spiti. Then our Kalpa sightseeing itinerary turned it into a full day of villages and viewpoints, and one of the best days of the trip.

We also managed to miss a bus, nearly skipped Chaka because we were still exhausted from the Yulla Kanda trek, and discovered that being too tired to walk outside can become a legitimate dinner strategy in the mountains.

So this isn't another list of things to do in Kalpa. It's what we actually did, what it cost us, what didn't work, and what we'd change if we went back.

Kalpa sightseeing itinerary at a glance

Time: about 7:00am to 4:30pm, with a private taxi

Stops: Kalpa Monastery, Rolla Cliff, Kinner Kailash viewpoint, Narayan Nagini Temple, Brelengi Gompa, Chandika Devi Temple (Kothi) and Chaka Meadows (we didn't reach the top)

Taxi cost: ₹3,000 for the full day. Homestay: ₹1,500 a night.

Best timing: Kinner Kailash viewpoint around midday. Do Chaka on a fresh day, not right after a trek.

Reckong Peo to Kalpa: We Missed the Bus, So We Took a Cab

We'd just wrapped up the Yulla Kanda trek that same day and made it to Reckong Peo fine — it was the connecting bus onward from Reckong Peo to Kalpa that we missed. Again. At this point in the trip, that wasn't bad luck anymore — it was a pattern.

What we did: Took a cab instead of waiting for the next bus

What we paid: ₹500

Where we stayed: A homestay in Kalpa, ₹1,500/night — stayed 2 nights since our onward bus was early morning

Why we booked so fast: Our driver was easygoing, so we booked him on the spot for the next day's sightseeing too — no comparison shopping, just went with it

The road up is short on distance but steep enough that you can watch Reckong Peo actually shrink below you as you climb. Worth knowing if switchbacks get to you — this stretch has a lot of them in a short space.

That evening, my friend decided she was done with the trip entirely and headed back to Delhi the next morning, flying home to Nagpur from there. From here on it was just me and my brother.

Our One-Day Kalpa Sightseeing Itinerary: What We Actually Managed

We told the driver we wanted to see everything, not just the standard stops. He delivered — more than we expected for a single ₹3,000 taxi day.

Time needed: we covered most of the circuit below in one day. Chaka was the one stop we couldn't finish — not from a lack of scheduled time, but because we were still running on empty from the Yulla Kanda trek we'd finished just the day before.

That's seven stops in one day, and it mostly worked, except for the one place we just didn't have the legs left for. Here's how our Kalpa sightseeing itinerary actually played out:

Chaka Meadows: The Stop We Shouldn't Have Rushed

Chaka was technically on our plan, but by the time we got there, we were still worn out from the Yulla Kanda trek we'd finished just the day before — the legs and lungs just weren't up for another climb yet.

Our driver took us up by car, and we got close enough to see the Kinner Kailash landscape from higher up, with noticeably fewer people around. But we didn't have the energy left to push all the way up to the meadows themselves, so we turned back. If you're building your own Kalpa sightseeing itinerary, keep Chaka for a fresh day.

If you're planning Chaka

Don't schedule it the day right after finishing a demanding trek like Yulla Kanda. If your legs are still recovering, either build in a rest day before you attempt Chaka, or do it earlier in your trip when you've got more in the tank.

Somewhere along the way, our driver also pointed out weed growing wild on the roadside — neither of us had ever actually seen it in person, and it made for a good laugh. He later pulled over unprompted and bought us veg soup and momos, and on the way back we grabbed a noodles parcel that turned out to matter more than we expected. We also met two dogs at the homestay, a friendly husky and a German Shepherd who took a little longer to warm up — a small, nice detail from an otherwise packed day.

What We Didn't Expect: Food in Kalpa at Night

Our homestay aunty told us, before heading out for the evening, to find dinner elsewhere if we got hungry.

We didn't. Kalpa does have restaurants, but late-night options can be limited depending on where you're staying, and by that point we were tired enough that walking around looking for something open sounded worse than just not eating properly.

Luckily, we'd picked up that noodles parcel earlier in the day. That became dinner.

Our takeaway

If you're staying somewhere quieter in Kalpa, don't assume you'll casually find food after dark. If there's a chance you'll be back at your homestay late, eat before you head back or carry something with you.

What We'd Change in Our Kalpa Sightseeing Itinerary

Next time
  • Don't schedule Chaka Meadows right after a demanding trek like Yulla Kanda — give your legs a rest day first, or do it earlier in the trip when you've got more energy.
  • Don't leave dinner until late if you're staying away from the main market area — eat before heading back, or carry something with you.
  • Reach the bus stop early for onward connections — after one too many missed buses on this trip, we stopped trusting tight timing.
  • If you find a reliable local driver, ask about the full sightseeing circuit — including the offbeat stops — before locking in the price, rather than assuming the standard route is all that's on offer.

What Our Kalpa Sightseeing Itinerary Actually Cost

₹6,600 total
  • Reckong Peo → Kalpa cab₹500 (split three ways, before my friend left)
  • Homestay room, 2 nights₹3,000 (₹1,500/night, split three ways)
  • Full-day sightseeing taxi₹3,000 (split two ways, after my friend had left)
  • Next-morning cab, additional amount₹100 (paid after Harsh joined us)

The group size changed partway through the stay, so this isn't a clean per-person number — treat ₹6,600 as the total for planning purposes, and adjust the split based on how many people you're actually travelling with at each stage.

The Next Morning: Don't Miss the Nako Bus

We were at the bus stop by 7:30am for the 9am bus to Nako. After the previous day's bus problems, we weren't taking any more chances.

We also came across the permit requirements for foreign travellers heading further into the Kinnaur–Spiti region. It wasn't something we had to deal with ourselves, so if you're travelling on a foreign passport, check the current requirements before starting this route.

Right before we left, someone at the homestay flagged down another traveler for us — a guy named Harsh, also heading to Kaza by bus, walking to the stop alone after checking out earlier. We gave him a lift, he chipped in for the cab without us asking, and he ended up sticking around with us for a good chunk of the rest of the trip.
